The Northyards mixed use project was envisaged to be the public hub of the new Northyards neighbourhood. The building responds to the adjacent railyards by offering usage of traditional materials applied in a contemporary application. The building is setback on the site to accommodate a large plaza that take advantage of the southern exposure. Located in a floodplain, the elevated building offered an interesting challenge to create pedestrian access, resolved through ramps, stairs and seat among lush planting beds. All vehicular movement on site is restricted to the front of the site providing access to a two storey underground parkade – the first in Squamish! Simple, yet dramatic roof lines add visual interest and playful Corten columns support the upper three levels of residential apartments.
